VETERANS HEADSTONES
Government-Provided Headstones and Markers for Veterans
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides free government-issued headstones or markers for the unmarked graves of eligible veterans, no matter when they passed, in cemeteries worldwide. For veterans who died on or after November 1, 1990, the VA can also furnish a headstone or marker for graves that already have a private memorial. Families may select a traditional headstone or a style introduced in 2009.
Headstone and Marker Design Options
Options include flat markers made from granite, marble, or bronze, as well as upright headstones in granite or marble. The chosen design must match the style of existing memorials at the burial location. Niche markers are also available for columbaria containing cremated remains.
Ordering Process for Veterans' Cemeteries
For burials in national cemeteries, state veterans' cemeteries, or cemeteries located on military bases or posts, the cemetery staff will arrange the order using inscription details provided by the next of kin or another authorized individual.

Eligibility for Spouses and Dependents
Spouses and dependents qualify for a government-issued headstone or marker only if they are buried in a national, state veterans', or military cemetery.
Installation in Private Cemeteries
While the VA provides the headstone or marker at no cost, families are responsible for arranging placement in private cemeteries and paying any associated installation fees.
